Over the years, the debate has moved from peak oil to peak conventional oil, which basically means that the endless expansion of easy oil is coming to a close. Fair enough, but this does not mean that oil is going away. The question is how fast unconventional oil ramps up, which of course depends on a combination of price and demand, geology, geopolitics, government policies and, one hopes, competition from cleaner alternatives. Some say the International Energy Agency is overly optimistic about the future of oil, but there have also been suggestions that the IEA is too conservative, that the oil industry might prove more adept at managing coming transition than many believe.
